Society's Power: Self-image and insecurities.
WE MAKE THE WORLD PERCEIVE THINGS THE WAY WE WANT TO.
I believe that many people in this World has in some ways have gone through this problem. Whether you're skinny or overweight, self-image and insecurities has in many ways affected on a person's view of themselves especially for women (but by saying this, it does not mean that men do not suffer this problem, in fact I know many men that faces the same problem, just as women do) however depending on the situation, many women are more pressured into looking, presenting, dressing and showcasing themselves even more properly to the eyes of the World or more likely to their surrounding society.
I am no stranger to the problem of self-image and insecurity, in fact this problem with self-image had plagued through my, at least, 15 years of existence (seeing that I am 21 years old now). You might be thinking surely when you were 5 or 6 years old, you were not pressured to look nice but things can surprise you. I was that young when I started to become aware of my body. Why? Well probably because I was much bigger than the rest of my peers and it did not help to boost my self confidence when some of my Aunt's would comment on my appearance and told me to be more cautious about what I ate (I was like 6 years old, chill)
I really do believe that society has a lot to do with how we perceive our image to the World and what we believe is beautiful and what is not. But it saddens me to say this but many of the Malaysian society has fallen into the pit of being harsh and mean towards those that are not categorised as beautiful or alluring. Although there are some beautiful souls still living and thriving in Malaysia where they spread love of everyone is beautiful however not many practise what they preach. I see so much potential in my country however as the multifaceted exchange of cultures happening in Malaysia, many begin to accept a very horrendous choice of looking things that are beautiful which is the mainstream beauty.
Instead progressing many parts of the World are regressing which is not what should happen as we move towards the future. If you ask me on how then do we change this? Well is it not obvious? Like the old saying goes, change starts with yourself. IF we truly want to change something in this World then we need to start by changing ourselves and not to only stop by ourselves but also those around us. We need to begin to see the bigger picture than just pointing out the small ones, one would not understand a story by simply listening to only one perspective but we listen to many and only then we would begin to comprehend the length, breath and depth of the meaning of the story.
Change starts with ourselves and those around us. We are the voice that spreads love, hope, empathy and also hate. Make the choice for a better future. Stop looking at things based on ethnicities, colours, race, meanings and ridiculousness, rather begin to see, understand things with compassion and empathy. This World is already polluted, let's not make it filled with hate and overly self-praising vanity and let's start reaching out to our more humane side.
